How to Impress a Woman: We Can Learn a Great Deal From Birds

When it comes to impressing women, men often seem to act a lot like birds. And if men can seem a bit bird-brained when it comes to women, rest assured that our feathered friends can offer some useful tips.

The Bowerbird.

The bowerbird has an unusual mating ritual that you might find strangely familiar. The male builds a fairly elaborate "bower", often with walls and sometimes even a roof. He'll decorate the nest with whatever shiny, colorful doodads he finds that tickle his fancy. Once he has a nest he can be proud of, he invites the females in. The female performs a thorough inspection of the bower and, if she likes what she sees, she stays the night. Bowerbirds are also unusual among birds in that they don't mate for life -- though females will generally return consistently to a few preferred males.
What Works:

Aside from the obvious lesson, to clean your apartment before inviting a woman in, what can we learn from the bowerbird? Women in general appreciate a measure of stability. Nobody wants to be treated as a one-night-stand, a disposable lover. So open up to her, let her get a sense of who you are, what you're passionate about. Get to know what she likes, so you can tailor your love-nest to better accommodate her.

What's For the Birds:

The male bowerbird is known to steal from others, taking someone else's decorative trinkets for his own bower. This might work among birds, but women are a bit more savvy. You might think your own life is a little too drab and needs a bit more color, some embellishment, and we all occasionally exaggerate our accomplishments. But don't get carried away. In general, women are more likely to be impressed by an honest man who is comfortable with himself.

The Peacock.

We all know about the peacock, right? The flashy show-off of the avian class, strutting around with his ostentatious display, the peacock is the very picture of style over substance.

What Works:

When trying to impress a woman, you do want to look your best. Put your best face forward. Be clean and well-groomed, and dress presentably. You don't need the tailored Armani suit, but you do need to look like you actually care about how you look.

What's For the Birds:

You might think your car, your phone, your bold display of conspicuous consumption, makes you look successful and thus more desirable. But to most women, you'll come off looking shallow. And if you're constantly on your phone, trying to impress her with how connected and important you are, you'll appear rude and shallow. Making her the center of your world is the best way to impress her.

The Rooster.

If the chicken doesn't strike you as a particularly proud or impressive bird, you've probably never seen a rooster strutting around the barnyard. It is from the Old English word for rooster that we get the modern term "cocky" -- an apt description of some men's tendency to strut and crow like a rooster in the henhouse. And they're extremely aggressive. For centuries, cockfighting was (and still is, in some parts of the world) a very popular blood-sport. Because when two roosters are put together in an enclosed space, they'll fight each other to the death.

What Works:

Self-confidence is vital. If you approach a woman with the attitude that she's way out of your league and you don't really deserve her, she's likely to come to the same conclusion. Instead, be aware of your own strengths and lead with them. You're probably not the handsomest or wealthiest guy in the room, but maybe you have a winning sense of humor. So open with a joke. Be honest with yourself, and figure out what you've got that sets you apart from all the other guys. Approach her with that. And do it with confidence.

What's For the Birds:

That Old English word for rooster...? In modern parlance it can be a synonym for "dick". As in, "don't be a...". Keep in mind, when one rooster attacks another it's because he feels threatened. Lashing out at every perceived competitor only makes you appear weak and insecure. And if you're jealous of every other guy she talks to, you're really telling her that you don't trust her. And you can trust me on this: she won't be impressed.
