When dealing with a relationship break up, you will find there are five stages that a person will go through. Understanding this is a natural process and knowing where you are in this process can help you cope.

The first stage you will experience is denial. You might tell yourself the break up is not real. You may find yourself waiting for your partner to show up like normal at dinner time or to meet you but they do not show up. Reality has not sunk in yet and you are not accepting the fact that your break up could have really happened.

What follows next is anger. You could be angry at anybody, taking your anger out on anyone at any time. You probably want to get even with your ex for letting this break up happen.

Next you might find yourself trying to bargain with your ex. You are trying to get them to come back to you by pleading or begging. You may find yourself pleading to a higher power to help you get your ex back. This stage could actually happen before the two of broke up.

Depression could next set in as you deal with your grief. Sadness, hopelessness and frustration could be overwhelming you. The future you had planned out for you and your ex has been pulled out from under you and you do not know where to turn.

When you reach the fifth and last stage a person will go through, you begin to accept what has happened. You realize the mistakes you have made or the reasons why your break up happened. You know your ex is no longer in your life or plays a different role now. Take heart that being able to accept is not resignation. You do not have to give up if you want to save your relationship yet.

You may have decided at this point that you just want to move on. You have set new goals for yourself and want to leave this relationship behind you. You appreciate the lessons learned from this experience and know in the future you can do better.

But if the urge strikes you to try and get your ex back, now is the best time. You have gone through those five stages of grief and so has your ex. You may have a whole new outlook now and hopefully are now better for it.
